Dr Manju trained as a specialist general surgeon in Queensland, Australia after his move from the UK.

He then undertook further sub-speciality training in Upper GI surgery (through the national board of upper GI training- AANZGOSA) at Perth (Bilio-pancreatic and Oesophago-gastric) and Austin, Melbourne (Bariatric and Oesophago-gastric), including a senior fellowship in Upper GI cancer surgery at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Birmingham, UK (a high volume European centre).

Gastro-oesophageal reflux is a normal phenomenon.

Oesophageal cancer is cancer of the upper food pipe.

Hiatus hernia is a condition where the contents of the abdominal cavity herniate into the cavity.

Achalasia cardia is a condition where the oesophagus does not contract, and the valve between the oesophagus and stomach does not relax to allow food into the stomach.

Barrett’s oesophagus is a precancerous condition where cells lining the inside of the oesophagus has been replaced by different cell type. This is called Barrett’s metaplasia. Worsening acid reflux is the most common factor that leads to the development of BE.

Gastroscopy: Involved examination of the oesophagus, stomach and the initial part of the small bowel called the duodenum.

A hernia is a condition where there is an abnormal protrusion of the abdominal cavity’s contents, through a weakness in the wall of the cavity.
